We’re sure you’ve spent the last few months working tirelessly with your artists and designers to create the perfect tee for your customers. And now that you’re ready to place your first tee order with BELLA+CANVAS, you probably have a few questions regarding sizing. Lucky for you, we’re experts in that field, and we’re here to help! Read on for advice on how to choose the right t-shirt size for your order.
Choosing the Right T-Shirt Size for Your Order
When it comes to men’s t-shirt size and women’s t-shirts size, there’s no magic answer or equation. It is typically recommended to order with a 1-2 2-1 ratio and if you have no idea where to start, this is not a bad formula to follow. Why? Many customers will be totally fine with going up a size in a tee because they figure it’ll shrink a bit. With that said, weighing towards the middle is common sense, but it doesn’t always work perfectly.
The solution? Knowing your customer! Knowing your customer base will ensure you get your tee shirt order right. After several runs and releases of different lines for your business, you will be able to see a pattern of the sizes that are selling out.
If this is your first release, follow the tips below to get it right on your first shot:
Get In Line with Your Customer
Who is your customer and what demographic do they fit into? If you’re buying tees for a cheerleading squad or yoga studio, opt for tees on the smaller side. We totally agree that stereotyping isn’t always the best way to go, but making smart assumptions is key when you’re trying to meet your customer’s needs.
Know Your Tee
Order a sample of the tee you’re looking to order, look at the product specs, and talk to your customer service rep about the fit and feel of the garment. If you’re ordering women’s tees, understand that not all styles will fit the same. BELLA+CANVAS’ slim-fit tees are made to fit small, and our relaxed fit collection is a little on the oversized side. With that said, be sure to select a fit that is in line with who your customer is and what your customer wants. Make sure to take advantage of our sample program so you can get 50% off up to seven samples each calendar year.
Here’s the bottom line: knowing your target market to the best of your ability will keep your pocket and your customers happy. Of course there’s no perfect formula to ordering sizes, so instead, try your best to put yourself in the shoes of your customer. And if all else fails, resort to the 1-2 2-1 method we mentioned earlier!

Hi – Wondering if someone can help me an order I placed at the Ric Flair Shop (website) below. I ordered a Medium, which was entirely way too small. Now, I’m trying to order another, but wondering you supply them with slim fit or regular so I can make the proper order. I realize this is a big ask, but appreciate if anyone can share!
BELLA+CANVAS
Hi Sean! It is best to speak with them directly about what inventory they carry, however, you can also talk to our team at [email protected]!
Dom
Hi,
What does the 1-2 2-1 ratio refer to?
Thanks,
Dom.
BELLA+CANVAS
Hi Dom! The 1-2 2-1 ratio (S:M:L:XL) is a formula that many decorators use, which assumes that the majority of consumers typically fall within the middle sizes. However, we explain in our blog that while it is common sense to weigh towards the middle, it doesn’t always work perfectly in certain cases!

Are the Unisex premium tees true to size, or would you advise going up a size when concerned it might fit small. Thank you.
BELLA+CANVAS
Hi Steven! Unisex is true to size for men and one size down for women, so you would order a size smaller for women. However, if you want a more relaxed fit you can always order their regular size too! Feel free to use our product specs sheet for your reference! https://bellacanvas.com/product-specs
