If you’re familiar with our brand, you’ve heard us say that we only use 100% Airlume combed and ring-spun cotton. But what does that actually mean? Well, the raw cotton we use goes through a unique process where it’s literally combed through to remove impurities. Then it’s ring-spun to create a long, nice strand of yarn. That yarn is turned into our Airlume Combed & Ring-Spun Cotton jersey fabric, which has a super tight weave, smooth consistency and creates an ideal surface to print on.
Six years ago, we set out to educate the industry on why combed and ring-spun cotton is that much more superior to carded open-end, or C.O.E. The main difference you’d notice right away when comparing our Airlume jersey fabric to a C.O.E. tee, is that carded open-end cotton is much more scratchy and heavy. It’s also inferior when it comes to printing. Since there are so many impurities left in the yarn, and a thinker weave, the ink doesn’t lay the same as it would on a smooth tight-knit BELLA+CANVAS tee.
Back In 2012, most people didn’t understand these differences or fully comprehend the importance in investing in quality. That’s why we created a series of entertaining videos that were aimed at educating consumers on the basic differences between combed and ring-spun cotton versus C.O.E. Now, 6 years later, people get it! The promotional industry is in the middle of an industry-wide typing point where more people than ever before are seeing the value of going with BELLA+CANVAS, the fastest-growing brand in the industry.
So if you’re a brand looking to join the movement to BE DIFFERENT, check out these throwback videos, which will be as relevant now as they were six years ago.

I’m not a fan of ring-spun cotton. I like a less tight weave. C.O.E. feels better to me in my T-shirts. New isn’t always better.

Well Ed,
I just found this ‘Toes on the Nose’ 26S Ring-Spun cotton T-shirt. The finest and superior T-shirt I have ever put on. It is softer, lies better and I feel regal in it! All I had were C.O.E. before.
That’s why I’m in here…and you’re out there.
Cheers, Dr. Trace Lambert

I love the rung spun cotton, I do, but I recently bought an embroidery machine and I’m learning the rung spun cotton isn’t the best for that type of embellishment. Do you have a tee shirt line that is heavier than the rung spun but lighter then the coe?
BELLA+CANVAS
Hi Lori! I’m curious what your embroidery experience is like. We typically get great reviews for decoration like that so I’m wondering what his going wrong? Reach out to our team at [email protected] for any issues you may be having. We do have a heavy weight tee you can try or we would also suggest trying our Street Fleece collection!
